Event FAQ's - Frequently Asked Questions

What shoes should I wear?

Shoes for Running Events:
The terrain of all our events is a mainly off road on paths, trails and tracks. Depending on the weather the ground underfoot can get very slippery and muddy. You can run all our events in road shoes, but most people use trail shoes with varying levels of grip on the sole. We would not recommend fell running shoes for our events, unless you are used to running long distances in them. What ever you wear please ensure they are comfortable and broken in.

Shoes for Mountain Bike Events:
For mountain bike events please use your usual cycling shoes (clip-less, SPD shoes or similar) or suitable comfortable and grippy trainers or hiking boots. Whether using cycling specific shoes or an alternative they should be safe, grippy and comfortable for both cycling and for walking if dismounted from your bike. What ever you wear please ensure they are comfortable and broken in.

What kit is compulsory?

There is no compulsory kit for any of our ultra races. For the Fan Dance there is a list of compulsory kit.

We do have a list of recommended kit which can be found by following the link from any of our event pages. This is a minimum and you are welcome to bring whatever you normally run with.

What Transportation is available?

For all our events there is an option to be picked up from a local station and dropped back at the end of the event. For more details please see the race specific page on the website.

We will also have available transportation to pick up any people who cannot complete a day, or who are injured.

What do I need for the overnight stops?

For the overnights you will need a sleeping bag, sleeping mat, wash kit, towel and comfortable clothing to wear in the evening. We also recommend ear plugs and eye pads.

What happens to our luggage when we are running/walking?

When competitors have finished with their bags at the start and subsequent mornings, they will be loaded onto a van and transported to the day's finish. There they will be laid out on the accommodation floor for you to collect when you finish.
Please limit yourselves to one bag (leave your hair strengtheners at home guys)

What are the facilities at the start and finish?

All our events (except the Fan Dance and the Pilgrim Challenge) have shower facilities at the finish.

All our overnights have excellent facilities for showering, sleeping and eating.

At all starts and finishes there will be the option to have tea / coffee and snacks.

When will I receive my race number?

Your race number will be given to you at registration on day 1 of the event.

How will I find my way? Will I be given a route card and directions?

Most of our events are run on clearly marked national trails or route marked paths.

At all events you are given a route card. For some events we also provide OS maps with the route clearly marked. For all events you also have the option to download GPS route data.

What should I wear?

What you wear is really personal preference, but clearly the conditions will dictate exactly what you wear. When deciding, you need to consider that in the autumn and winter, conditions can change quickly and you will be out on the course for a long time.

In the spring and summer you also need to consider weather changes, but also the effect of the sun on your skin.

Please view our recommended kit list for extra items of clothing to wear and/or carry.

What group should I start with?

The 3 start groups are based on a mileage per hour.

  • Walker start – 3 miles per hour (20 minute miles)

  • Main Start – 4 – 6 miles per hour (10 minute miles)

  • Elite Group – 7 – 9 miles per hour (>10 minute miles)

It is important that you do not start too early as the checkpoint and finish opening times are based on the above timings.

How much luggage can I bring?

Whilst we want you to be comfortable, please consider that all luggage has to be transported by the team every day.

We would like each competitor to bring one reasonably sized bag which can hold your sleeping bag, over night gear and a change of clothes for each days running.

There is no need to bring a dinner jacket or party frock, 5 different pairs of running shoes, and the kitchen sink!

What food is at the checkpoints?

Our checkpoint food is famous and you will not go hungry out on the course!

We provide a variety of savoury food (sandwiches, nachos, pretzels, sausages etc) and sweet food (cakes, biscuits, sweets etc) at every checkpoint.

You can provide us with a drop bag for specific Check Points if you have special dietary requirements.

Is there much water at the checkpoints?

Enough for everyone to fill their bladders and bottles.

Can I bring my dog?

Dogs are very welcome to accompany you on the route. At some of the overnight locations dogs will not be able to join you, so you may need to make your own arrangements for accommodation.

I have specific dietary requirements?

If you have specific dietary requirements please let us know on your entry form or email us. We will then let the catering staff know at each location to ensure that there is an option for you.

What is the distance and elevation of the Fan Dance?

It's 15 miles total, You start at the camp-site, go to the top, down to checkpoint 1, back up to the top, down to checkpoint 2, back up to the top, then down to the finish at the camp-site. So have to run 15 miles with a total height gain of about 1700m. You only do it once, timed.

Do you have a race cut off time for competitors in the Ultra races?

No! We wait until the last person still running/walking has finished.

Does the Ridgeway200 Enduro have a time limit?

The Event itself will technically not have a time limit however the event must be completed in the hours of daylight due to the obvious problems of night riding activities.

On the Enduro do you provide transport back to Wendover?

If you are only booked on Day 1 you will need to arrange your own transport home.

Anyone who has booked the full Enduro and has to retire will be transported to the finish.

Anyone who can’t continue on the Sunday will be transported back to Wendover when we return to set up the finish.

Can I pay by Credit Card?

Yes, just follow the booking process through to the payment page

Can I register and pay for 2 events at the same time?

No, you must enter each event. Once you have registered you only need to enter your email and password for any event after the first.

What is your refund policy?

We will provide full refund up to a month prior to the event, after this time we are sorry there will be no refunds. We will however, offer you a free final day on any future event. i.e. enter Day 1 and overnight on a 2 day event or Day 1 and 2 on a 3 day event and the final day will be free.

Can I use the facilities at the finish even though I’m only doing one day?

Of course, we don’t send our competitor’s home muddy and ponging.

Are poles allowed on the Fan Dance?

Yes, how else would you keep your tent up? Walking sticks are OK except for the FEW because you are carrying a weapon.
